On Tuesday, Alain Locke’s seventh grade All-Stars had the wonderful opportunity to let their creativity and self-expression shine in a writing and poetry workshop.
During the workshop hosted by Young Chicago Authors, our All-Stars dove head first into the fascinating concept of synesthesia, a literary device in which combinations of the five senses are used together to create vivid imagery. In doing so, they explored their emotions and personal experiences through crafting original poems that they shared with their peers during an open mic-style performance.
YCA was also nice enough to invite our seventh-graders to further nurture their creative talents by attending their “Every Word Counts” songwriting workshop, which takes place every Saturday. It’s just one of the many free programs in multiple disciplines the creative writing nonprofit organization offers for young people. They even put on the largest youth poetry festival in the country!
To top off all of this good fun, we’re also proud to announce that our All-stars Paige, Raziya, and Da’Naira received special invitations to register for the Rooted & Radical Youth Poetry Festival!
Thank you to YCA for all you do to inspire creativity among young people! We’d also like to extend our sincere gratitude to Communities in Schools for partnering with us to make this enriching experience possible for our All-Stars. See all of the pictures from Tuesday’s workshop below.
