We know that children start learning from the moment they are born. We also know that parents are the most important teachers of their young children. A family does best when both parents and children are reaching their educational goals. The Family Literacy Center provides a broad range of free instruction and educational support to help families reach their goals:

  • Infant-toddler classes. Teachers work with the very youngest children to stimulate brain growth and set the foundation for development of foundational language, literacy and math skills.
  • Parenting workshops. Parents learn the milestones of child development, and work on skills and strategies to help their children develop academically, socially and emotionally.
  • Interactive Literacy for Parents and their Children. Parents and children together engage in activities that strengthen the parent - child bond and develop the parent role as teacher.
  • Adult education. Parents improve their own literacy and math skills, work toward their GED, and practice life skills that are helpful in raising a healthy family.

Alain Locke’s Family Literacy Center provides a single, one-stop education for students from birth through elementary school along with programs to help parents support their children's development. This innovative integration of programs creates a powerful educational opportunity.
