ICTC teachers are leading the charge to close the achievement gap. They have gone on to become school founders, principals and district executives and have won distinguished awards and honors in education, including: Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, Golden Apple Award, Kohl-McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Award and the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Heart of the School Award.
The ICTC Experience for Corps Members in the Faith-Based Community Program
Your ICTC experience will be an intense and rewarding two-year program during which you will live in an intentional community setting with other corps members who represent a variety of faith backgrounds. Housing will be provided by ICTC. By living in community, you will have frequent opportunities to reflect on your experience with your fellow corps members. This happens through frequent community dinners, retreats and discussions in addition to the shared joys and challenges of living together day in and day out.
Members of the corps are given a unique opportunity—the chance to impact the lives of children; the chance to grow personally and spiritually by persevering through challenging circumstances; the chance to work side-by-side with other talented young people from around the country with similar principles and passions; and the chance to put your education to work for those whose needs are most neglected by our society.
As members of the Faith-Based Community, the challenges of teacher leadership and community living are great, but the rewards are immeasurable. Our teachers touch the lives of countless children, empowering them to achieve academic success. Corps members’ lives are equally enriched as they build lasting and transformative relationships with both students and community members.
You will begin your experience in ICTC with a summer of coursework at the #7 nationally ranked Northwestern University School of Education and Social Policy. Throughout the summer, you will work with ICTC to obtain a teaching position in one of Chicago’s Catholic schools supported by the Big Shoulders Fund. Corps members will be certified to teach self-contained kindergarten through eighth grade. Over your two years with ICTC, you will receive top-notch support from ICTC’s expert coaches including observation, modeling and feedback, all designed to give you the tools to drive high student achievement.
Program Considerations
- All living costs (food, housing, transportation, and technology) are paid by ICTC
- Corps members receive $150 stipend per month
- The remainder of the teaching salary going to provide corps members with teacher development, professional support and acquisition of school supplies and program costs
- Health and dental insurance are provided by the school at no cost to the corps member
- Access to automobiles
- Access to technology
- Quarterly spiritual retreats
- Monthly community events
- Personal and professional support personnel
- Teacher resource library
- 22 credits (eight courses) toward a Master of Science in Education through Northwestern University
- ICTC is an AmeriCorps Education Award Program, contingent upon federal funding

Post-Program Leadership Development Opportunities
The Alain Locke Initiative is committed to ongoing leadership development of ICTC alumni, rising star teachers ready to propel their leadership trajectory, through early-career professional development to increase their impact in the classroom. Additional leadership and development opportunities after ICTC program completion include:
- Ability to complete a Master of Science in Education degree through ICTC’s partnership with Northwestern University
- Opportunity to potentially join the future pipeline of applicants to The Ryan Fellowship
