The Need:
Children in high poverty communities start falling behind before the age of 3. Most of them never catch up.
- By the age of 3, children living in poverty have only HALF the vocabulary of other children
- Only 8% of 8th grade graduates in Chicago public schools go on to earn a college B.A.
- While wages of skilled workers are increasing, the real wages of high school dropouts have declined
The Challenge:
How do we raise the quality of underperforming schools so that children have the opportunity to achieve their potential?
- Urban schools – charter, traditional, and Catholic schools -- are underperforming their potential. One of the most challenging problems holding back urban schools has been a shortage of high talent/high impact leaders
